Plumber Plumbers install, repair and service gas and water systems for commercial buildings, homes and industrial facilities. In order to become a plumber, one will work as an apprentice for between four and five years and then take a test to become licensed. An apprenticeship includes both classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training. Once plumbers graduate their apprenticeships, they are free to work with the company of their choosing. Metalworker The job of a metalworker is to construct products, metal parts, tools and equipment for industry consumers and employees. Electrician Electricians specialize in bringing power to commercial establishments, residences and industrial complexes. Some electricians may work in other areas of construction, although, this is not required to be an electrician. Electricians find themselves working in a variety of different industries, working on and repairing wires and related components. In order to become an electrician, an individual can either attend a school vocational program or an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships typically last for four years. After completing the apprenticeship or other vocational program, the electrician will become certified and either work for an established company or work as an independent contractor. Steel Erector Steel erectors are responsible for placing, raising and uniting steel or iron columns, girders and structural members in order to facilitate forming structures or other frameworks. Steel erectors are required to attend an apprenticeship or other specialized training program before working in the field. Due to the hazardous nature of this job, people do not work in the field long. Workers will typically work in the field for a time before either becoming a manager over a team of workers or starting his own company. Carpentry Carpenters specialize in the construction of buildings. To become a carpenter, individuals can obtain an associates degree in carpentry at a technical college, attend a vocational program in school that teaches wood working skills, or complete an apprenticeship program. When carpenters finish training, they work as contractors, project managers, or own a company that specializes in providing carpentry services.
